This piece is made in remembrance of the 2021 Caldor Fire that affected most of El Dorado County, CA. It’s made from evacuation orders, Morse code and burned paper. It’s designed from a photo taken in Placerville when the smoke was so thick you couldn’t even see the car in front of you. The original is 12x16", made entirely out of hand-cut paper and took 17 hours to complete.
In the fall of 2021, we were living in the land of the Pink Sun for a while in my area of California. This piece is my narrative on the Caldor Fire. The original is 12x16” and made from hand-cut paper using evacuation orders, burned paper and Morse code that says ‘S.O.S fire’. Designed from a photo we took in Placerville when the air quality was in the upper 800’s and you couldn’t even see the car in front of you the smoke was so thick.
It's just so heartbreaking to see the fires spread and push people from their homes and destroy so much of our gorgeous county. It's also fills my heart with gratitude to see the community come together and help each other. Thank you to those firefighters who risk their lives daily. Thank you to the community members who've stepped up and offered their homes, supplies and time to those in need and displaced.
