When my client came to me wanting a mountain scene made from the map of her favorite hiking spots, I was all in. The Tahoe Desolation Wilderness is such a beautiful place and being able to capture her memories in this image was an honor. I thought it would be way easier to find a map considering we’re so close to Tahoe, but that wasn’t the case, I had to call over a dozen places, visit several gas stations, and because of Covid, many stores were shut down. Finally I found one in downtown Placerville, Ca. When I started designing I went to rip the mountain shape out of the map and found that these maps are covered in a thin waterproof coating, making them durable and rip resistant. So instead of going with my original plan of ripping the mountain, I cut the shape instead. The sky paper is designed with synonyms for the word ‘sky’ laid out in a horizontal orientation, along the horizon. The paper for the trees was designed in a similar fashion with the synonyms for the word ‘tree’ printed on the paper but they’re vertically placed, reaching up towards the heavens. What a fun piece to capture some beautiful memories.
